10:10… and other “ silly questions”!!

clock

Have you ever asked yourself why in all glamorous hand-watch ads the minute and hour hands (those small pieces which pointed to the time) are in position of 10:10 ?!!.... Last week, I had a discussion with my friends about this and about other similar subjects.

It is all started when one of my friends who called Mohamed asked this question. Everybody laughed at him and just commented “ what a silly question??!!” . They thought they knew the right answer .They said “ When the American Air Force dropped the first Atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945 ,the time was 10:10”…….. I said “ No It’s wrong the bombing of Hiroshima wasn’t at that time” … they simply replied “ So, it’s the bombing of Nagasaki.” I found it is unreasonable because why they would remember the second bombing not the first.

After a while Mohamed came up with a new theory , he explained by saying “ They put hand-watches at hour ten ,ten minutes and thirty seconds simply to divide the watch circle into three equal parts -20 minutes for each one. It was the first time I heard about it but I really liked it because it’s simple and reasonable.

I still remember another theory which I had been told by my brother . It says : by putting clock hands at 10:10, you draw a face with a nice smile ( can you imagine that?).

Finally , I asked the help of my most knowledgeable friend –the Internet of course .I found many theories and explanations. One of it connects this time with the time of President Lincoln’s assassination ( The 16th president of the USA) . Another one, which is very interesting, claims that most of watch manufacturers do this in their ads just to make their brand names clearer and in this way their watch will attract more buyers.

It’s not the only “silly question” we often ask, yes there are many of these “silly questions” need to be considered, let me mention some of them: Why 7up called 7up?? why French people pronounce letter R in that way??? And why women still like the high heel??

Can you think for a minute and try to answer the above questions?? Do you have other “silly questions” ? please share us.

Obama is Safe!!!

on Thursday, February 5, 2009

Never think that Barack Obama will be an easy target for any assassin. With this Cadillac "Obamobile" Obama is safe even more than any American soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan, this tank I mean car provides a full protection against explosions and any bullets kind. Moreover, it just costs £300,000 so why Americans didn't give this tank to their soldiers in Iraq instead of Abrams M1 tank which failed to provide the necessary protection against the primitive weapons of Iraqi resistance, or maybe these primitive weapons are the weapons of mass destruction which was the reason to invade Iraq.

Finally, I am wondering if Obama will honour his promises and withdraw the American forces from Iraq, to be safe in next presidential elections after four years!!???

Life Changes

on Sunday, March 2, 2008

In my English course book there is a story a real one about redundancy and how changes people's life. It is titled "Life changes", and it is about Zoe, an old lady who lived for her work. She was a successful PR consultant and life was going well. She had a great job, a beautiful flat and a busy social life of expensive restaurants and late-night clubs.

Then, the unthinkable happened. One evening she received a text message telling her she was out of work. As she put "life was hell, the first two weeks were the most difficult to live through." She said "after everything I'd done for company, they fired me by a text! I was so angry and I just didn't feel like looking for another job. I hated everything about the city and my life.

The tragedy started when Zoe received an invitation from an old schoolfriend, Kathy to come and stay with on the farm she had just bought with her Husband Huw. Zoe jumped at the chance to spend a weekend away from London, "the moment I arrived to Kathy's farm everything about my past life seemed superficial. When I asked Kathy if I could work for her, she refused to take me seriously at first. She told me how much farm hands get paid and she blushed with embarrassment."

And now, ten months later, Zoe is still on the farm. Zoe said she never felt bored. She has been helping with lambing-watching a lamb being born is incredible, she says,' it's one of the most moving experience I've ever had. I could never go back to city life now. Redundancy is the best thing that has ever happened to me!!!"

Here I can say I'm really surprised. She considers redundancy is the best thing has happened in her life. What could happen if I received a text message telling me that my company doesn't need my services anymore, I think everything in my life would collapse. I can't even imagine myself in such situation, unemployed, lost everything just by a text. In Libya we saw something similar to this happened with teachers. They suddenly found themselves without job, and they told them "we don't need you anymore."

What do you think? What would happen if you received such text telling you 'you're redundant."?
